Shares of Broadcom rose following news of a $10 billion order from a mystery customer, widely believed by analysts to be OpenAI. This order marks OpenAI's shift toward custom AI chips from Broadcom, moving away from its previous reliance on NVIDIA and AMD hardware for powering AI models. 

Industry analysts and reports indicate that OpenAI joins Google, Meta, and ByteDance as major Broadcom customers. The deal is seen as a significant validation of the custom chip approach and could challenge NVIDIA's dominance in the AI chip market. Despite NVIDIA CEO Jensen Wang's public skepticism about custom chips, the company has reportedly started building its own custom chip division, suggesting it is taking the competitive threat seriously.

The AI silicon power shift

Stocks overall a bit weaker, but shares of Broadcom surging today after strong earnings and disclosing a new mystery customer with $10 billion in orders. Christina Partsanevelis has the details in today's tech check segment. Christina. Sarah, that $10 billion order could shatter NVIDIA's AI dominance, and OpenAI appears to be that mystery customer behind it. Broadcom CEO Hawk Tan revealed yesterday on the call that they secured, like you said, $10 billion in orders from a, quote, fourth customer for custom AI chips with shipments beginning in 2026. JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley analysts, as well as the Financial Times, believe this is OpenAI joining Google, Meta, and ByteDance as Broadcom's latest mega customer. The deal, though, really underscores a shift in AI compute. By betting on Broadcom custom chips over NVIDIA's powerful but pricey GPUs, OpenAI is making its clearest break yet from NVIDIA's ecosystem, and this after using only chips from NVIDIA and AMD to power its AI models over the last little while. The contradiction, though, is stark. NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Wang has been, well, let's call it dismissive of custom chip threats. At NVIDIA's last tech conference, GTC in March, CEO Jensen Wang said, quote, a lot of ASICs get canceled. ASICs are the custom chips, and he believes most custom chip products won't do much because, quote, the ASIC still has to be better than the best, implying that GPUs are the best. Yet NVIDIA has quietly established its own custom chip division. And this, according to the Commercial Times, recruiting talent from Taiwan's chip firms, the company appears to be making or taking the competitive threat seriously, despite Jensen Wang's public dismissals. Broadcom expects the total addressable AI chip market to hit about $60 to $90 billion by 2027, with OpenAI's $10 billion order representing massive validation of this custom chip model. Jensen's dismissive comments about canceled products may prove wrong, as this deal could mark the beginning of, dare I say, at the end of NVIDIA's monopoly pricing power. OpenAI's massive bet on Broadcom signals a new phase, definitely, in the AI infrastructure competition.
