The state of Illinois earlier this week sued President Trump to prevent the deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago. A federal hearing on that matter is scheduled for tomorrow. In the interim, roughly 200 members of the Texas National Guard arrived overnight yesterday. Sources familiar with the operation tell CBS News that they're stationed at the U.S. Army Reserve Training Center in Ellwood, about 50 miles southwest of Chicago. Now, the deployment comes after the Trump administration moved to send hundreds of Illinois and Texas Guard members to the city following several weeks of sweeping immigration raids here that have triggered, at times, tense protests against federal agents. Illinois officials have accused the Trump administration of purposefully creating chaos as a pretext to rationalize the Guards' deployment. Now, as we await a federal judge's ruling on whether the troops can enter Chicago, President Trump on Tuesday again floated the idea of potentially circumventing the courts by invoking the Insurrection Act.
