Rescue efforts are ongoing, with Tibetan firefighters mobilized to assist those still trapped, while about 350 trekkers have already reached safety.

The storm, described as uncommon for this time of year, buried trails and damaged tents at elevations above 16,000 feet. Some climbers have reported cases of hypothermia within their groups. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about overcrowding and safety on Everest, which straddles the border between Nepal and China.

Tents were crushed and trails were buried in this Himalayan valley known for its soaring peaks and panoramic views, which lies at an elevation of over 16,000 feet. Cell phone videos show trekkers trudging through the snow. Around 350 have now made it to safety. One of them told our partners at the BBC the snowstorm hit just shortly after they began their trek on Saturday. Despite having visited the Himalayans more than a dozen times, he had never experienced such extreme weather and said several people in his group of 20 showed signs of hypothermia. The Chinese government has mobilized Tibetan firefighters in an attempt to save those who are left. Mount Everest, or Mount Komalangma in Tibetan, sits on the border between Nepal and China. Climbers attempt to scale the world's tallest peak from base camps in both countries, where in recent years, overcrowding, environmental damage, and a series of fatal climbing attempts has caused serious concern.
