Tackling the weather: Where to sit to watch football

Hello and welcome everyone. My name is Mark Willard and joining me today is senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdmann. Jonathan, we're smack dab in the middle of football season right now and we know the impact of weather on the field, but I want to talk about off the field specifically from the fan perspective. So what sort of things should fans out there take into consideration when buying tickets? So the biggest thing I look for when I'm buying tickets is, will my seat be in the sun? Now that could be a problem if it's hot early in the season. If you're going to a game in the south, even in October it can still be hot. But later in the season, in December or January, you might want that seat in the sun to make you feel a little less cold. So what I'll usually do is I'll look at the stadium in Google Maps to see how it aligns north to south or east to west and I can figure out then if it's an afternoon game, what part of the stadium might be in the sun and what part might be shaded. Now we can't predict if there will be sunshine that day, but at least it allows you to hedge a bit toward a seat out of the hot sun in, say, October. What a pro move that is, like looking at Google Maps and just figuring out, okay, we're going to be the southeast corner. Sun's going to be here at 3 p.m. That's just like, that's next level thing. I love that. So, okay, so we know there's nothing worse than having a wet seat when it's cold out. How can fans plan for a dry, we'll say, butt? Well, here's a case where you want your seat in the sun. You know, so if you're going to a game where, say, it's a rainy time of year or even a, you know, later in the winter months, a snowy time of year, you know, maybe you opt for a seat in the sun. Maybe you can get some melting action going on. So if it rained or snowed the previous day, your seat might be dry by the time you get to the stadium. So that's maybe a little bit of a hack. Again, we can't predict day-to-day weather, you know, months in advance, but that's something you might think about, say, if you're going to a game in Buffalo and seeing the Bills there, and you know, it snows, maybe you can get a little bit of help from Mother Nature, you know, kind of drying your seat out. Let's say I am buying a, you know, a ticket for the Bills game in, you know, two or three weeks. So what can I, as a fan, like, look at when buying tickets, like, to predict the weather? Is there anything we can do, or is it just a crapshoot? Well, one tip I usually do, and I've been to, you know, I'm a Green Bay Packer fan. I've been in some games up at Lambeau later in the season. If you're going to stay in the city for the game overnight, I would book accommodations as close to the stadium as you can. In case there's snow or ice and slick roads in place, then you only have a short ride to the stadium, or maybe you could just walk across the street to the stadium. You wouldn't have to worry about driving, say, 10 or 20 miles on snowy or icy roads. That's the last thing you want to deal with. Say, if you're a Dolphins fan and you're visiting Foxborough in December, January, do you really want to drive 15 miles through the Boston suburbs to get to Foxborough on snowy roads? I don't.
