The court appearance will address whether Robinson and his legal team will agree to a preliminary hearing, where a judge will decide if there is sufficient evidence for a trial. Legal experts note that the defense may face challenges due to the high-profile nature of the case and the amount of evidence already available to the public, including bystander videos. Robinson has not yet entered a plea, and the overall timeline for the case is expected to be lengthy.

More than two weeks after Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and close ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University, his suspected killer is set to appear in court today. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty for Robinson if convicted. And today also marks Robinson's defense attorney's first appearances as his counsel. Our Haley Gravitt is joining us in studio now to tell us more about his appearance in court today and what an attorney here in Las Vegas thinks about this case. Good morning Haley. Good morning and we do know this morning that Tyler Robinson will be facing his court appearance virtually today. So today's court appearance will decide whether Robinson and his legal team will agree to a preliminary hearing. That's where the judge will decide if there is enough evidence against him to go forward with trial. After speaking with the criminal defense attorney, I learned the overwhelming evidence against Tyler Robinson early on in this case could be a challenge for his defense. Frank Como is a former Clark County Deputy District Attorney and current criminal defense attorney here in Las Vegas. He shared with me what his experience prosecuting the death penalty and regular homicide cases in Nevada that the defense will have challenges in Robinson's case. Como is not affiliated with his case but expects the defense will have to look at what already has been shared to the media telling me they will likely have to play damage control. As a prosecutor if I look at this case you're in the driver's seat. This is a case that will be very easy for the state of Utah to prove beyond a reasonable doubt as to what degree of homicide this was. As a defendant you're entitled to a fair trial. You don't want to start having law enforcement start polluting the well of juror panels, the jury that's going to be picked in this case and that they already made up their mind. And Como told me that since this is such a high profile case the defense will have to look at evidence that's already out including videos from bystanders from the day of Charlie Kirk's death. He believes the defense in Robinson's case will be looking at whether mental health was a factor in their defense. Tyler Robinson has yet to plead to the charges against him. Today's hearing should be simple and quick but Como tells me the timeline for the case as a whole will likely be anything but fast. Reporting in studio, I'm Haley Gravitt.
