Super Typhoon Ragasa has made landfall in southern China, leading to the evacuation of nearly two million people in Guangdong province. The storm, described as the strongest of the year, brought hurricane-force winds, torrential rain, and a significant storm surge to Hong Kong, causing severe flooding and widespread damage, including at the Fullerton Hotel.

In Taiwan, the typhoon caused a dam to overflow, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 people and leaving 17 missing. A bridge was also washed away. Authorities in China have called Ragasa the 'King of Storms,' and the region continues to deal with the aftermath of the destruction.

Welcome back. A powerful typhoon has made landfall over southern China this morning. The storm has killed more than a dozen people in Taiwan and forced nearly two million people to evacuate in China's Guangdong province. CBS News foreign correspondent Anna Karen is dealing with this herself. She's joining us from Hong Kong. Anna, I always tell you to stay safe wherever you are traveling in the world, but especially at home. I know you had to sandbag your home because of heavy rains and high winds there. So how are you and the family doing? How are folks in the region faring? Yeah, we're much better now. Thank you. Certainly talking to you, Errol. Look, they are calling it the strongest storm of the year, Super Typhoon Regassa. It pummeled Hong Kong this morning with a ferocity that we really have not seen here for years. Authorities said it was going to bring hurricane-force winds, torrential rain, and a storm surge that they described as phenomenal. Well, it certainly delivered. It left a path of destruction. We want to show you some incredible video of Fullerton Hotel. This is a luxury hotel in Hong Kong where a torrent of water, it crashed through the lobby, sending people and glass flying. Elsewhere, there was severe flooding, fallen trees. You know, this is a city of 7.5 million people, the financial hub of Asia. It was completely shut down. And then in neighboring Taiwan, Errol, it had heavy, heavy rain, and that caused a dam to overflow. And then there was this wall of water that killed 14 people downstream. The latest number that we have is 17 people are still missing. It also washed away a bridge in Taiwan. Now, in southern China, as you mentioned, hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated. Authorities calling this the King of Storms. I mean, really, it was a Category 4 hurricane that struck Hong Kong and southern China today. And you mentioned my family. Yes, we live very close to the water, probably too close for comfort today. And I just want to show you now this video. So we thought that the high tide was over, and then we had this massive surge of water. And as you can see, our front yard has turned into a pool. But so far, a dirty pool. But so far, oh, there's a little bit of water coming in. Oh, it's still coming, it's still coming. Towels! Towels! So, Errol, what's normally a very quiet, calm history was transformed into this menacing threat. Thankfully, through perseverance, my boys' help, and preparation of sandbags, we managed to prevent any further flooding. But unfortunately, not everybody got away unscathed. Yeah, no, good lesson in preparing as best you can in these types of things, and good commentary from your little ones there, noting just how frightening this can be for so many.
