A strong pressure gradient off the Southeast coast is bringing strong winds, stormy weather and the threat of rip currents. Cities from Jacksonville to Atlantic City could see wind gusts up to 20 mph or more.

Meteorologists have highlighted strong winds and rough surf as primary concerns along the US East Coast. The combination of high pressure to the north and low pressure systems is increasing wind speeds, especially during the afternoon and as a coastal low strengthens. While winds may calm somewhat overnight, conditions are expected to intensify again, bringing showers, thunderstorms, and a high risk of rip currents. The Outer Banks and coastal Virginia are among the areas most at risk for hazardous surf and rip currents.

Strong winds, storms and rip currents for the East Coast

I think the biggest concern for us is going to be some of the wind and the rough surf. We've got a high pressure to the north, we've got these areas of low pressure, and we've got the pressure gradient only increasing those winds as we get into the second half of the day. The wind is getting stronger in the afternoon, of course mixing down from some of those upper levels of the atmosphere too, but through the overnight hours we see a little bit calmer as far as the wind goes. We get to Monday afternoon, now we're starting to see that coastal low strengthening a little bit and once again we're dealing with the wind. I think in addition to that we're going to be dealing with the showers and thunderstorms too. On top of that we've got the rip current threat, we've got a high risk of rip currents there in the Outer Banks, coastal Virginia included in that.
