A major winter storm is forecast to impact the Northeast United States following Christmas, with snow and ice expected across a wide area. New York City, Philadelphia, Long Island, and parts of New England are predicted to receive several inches of snow, with higher elevations possibly seeing over six inches.

The storm is expected to begin late in the week, with precipitation potentially ending as freezing drizzle in some locations. Significant travel delays are anticipated from late Friday into Saturday due to hazardous road conditions caused by snow and ice.

Storms to bring snow and ice to Northeast after Christmas

We have all the ingredients for a post-Christmas Day snowstorm and it will include New York City. We begin with the ingredients. We're going to be watching a cold front dropping south on Christmas Day. It'll be across New York State. Then it comes south and east Christmas night and then we have a puddle or dome of cold air across the northeast Friday morning. We'll watch a storm move eastward. What is that going to do? It's going to produce a west-southwest wind at the surface. That'll butt up against that colder air as warmer air comes in and then you get the snow. Now there's our snow map. Along with the snow, well let's talk about the snow, a large area of at least one to three inches of snow including Philadelphia. Once you get northward along the Pennsylvania-New York state line including New York City, there's going to be at least three to six inches of snow. That'll be Friday night into Saturday and then in the higher elevations in the Catskills, we're looking at over six inches of snow and there is the potential of that six plus inches of snow to include New York City and all of Long Island. There's also going to be a lot of ice with this on the southwestern side of the storm. Again this will be from Friday to Saturday and be careful. Saturday morning as the storm leaves in locations like New York City, Long Island and perhaps even Boston, the precipitation could end as freezing drizzle. Lots of travel delays as we get into late Friday and Friday night.
