AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva was live on Oct. 12 to discuss the latest on the tropics and a coastal storm impacting the eastern U.S.

A major storm system is moving north along the US East Coast, stretching from South Carolina to southern New England. The storm is producing strong winds, with gusts up to 60 miles per hour reported on North Carolina's Outer Banks, and generating waves up to 20 feet in some areas. These conditions are leading to significant coastal flooding, particularly during high tide cycles.

Meteorologists note that the storm's slow movement means the impacts will persist through several high tide cycles, increasing the risk of beach erosion and prolonged flooding. In addition to this system, meteorologists are monitoring two other tropical waves in the Atlantic, with one having a low chance of development but still being closely watched for potential impacts.

Storm strengthens as it moves north

It's time now, I believe, to bring in our hurricane expert, lead hurricane expert, Alex DaSilva. And Alex, as we follow this storm northward, it's created some challenges throughout the forecasting journey. Yeah, it certainly has. And like the camera that you just showed, we're starting to see conditions going downhill further north as this storm slowly makes its way up the coast here. And a lot of the energy is actually being spread out here as the storm starts to move north here. You can just see how wide of a scope this storm reaches from. It reaches all the way from South Carolina right now where we're seeing some flooding rain, all the way up to just off the coast of Southern New England. So it just goes to show just how wide of a scope this storm has right now. And with it bringing the problems of wind and of course, some of that rainfall. So we're gonna break it down piece by piece. Let's start with some of those winds. This is really the biggest component, I think, and what we should focus on because it has not only the impact of what you have on land, but also with the seawater coming in. Yeah, pretty strong winds here along the coast of the Carolinas, as well as coming up towards the mid-Atlantic states. I've seen gusts approaching 60 miles per hour on the outer banks of North Carolina. So, you know, quite the windy event here and what it's doing to the seas. Take a look at this. We're seeing waves, you know, 15, maybe closer to 20 feet in some areas here. And a lot of this energy is gonna be coming right on shore here, especially during these high tide cycles. And that's why we're very concerned about that coastal flooding, especially during the next several high tide cycles. And these winds partly strengthened by that chilly October air mass that a lot of us enjoyed, I think, for a taste of fall in the Northeast. Yeah, we're dealing with like a little bit of a squeeze play here. You have your storm to the South and then big area of high pressure to the North bringing that cooler air. But what's happening is between those two, it's funneling. It's like funneling between two buildings almost. It's funneling that wind into the coast and that's what's causing the coastal flooding. But not only that, the fact that the storm is really gonna be slowing down here over the next couple of days. It's a prolonged event. This is not just one high tide cycle and done. This is going to be multiple high tide cycles through the rest of the weekend and into early next week as well, where we're gonna have a constant push from the East eating away at those beaches. Yeah, it's going to be a battle right through the middle of this upcoming week, especially as the storm lingers. We also want to talk about some other things in the tropics because this is the time of year, still October, so there's other things going on. There are. You can see two highlighted areas. One more in the central main development area and then one just coming off of Africa. That first wave, that lead wave, we do expect to turn to the North here over the next day or so. That's the orange area. Make its way out to the middle of the Atlantic. Might become a tropical storm. That'll stay away from the United States. The next wave, the one that's coming off of Africa now, that is the yellow area that we have highlighted with a low chance of development. That's an area I think we're gonna have to watch a little closer because it might be able to slide underneath a lot of this wind shear. So you can notice the wind shear, the darker colors indicating higher amounts of wind shear. That first tropical wave kind of moves up into that wind shear, which is why we expect it to not become all that strong. The next wave, though, might be able to sneak underneath a lot of that hostile wind shear and may have a better chance of getting more organized and developing and then potentially impacting the islands down the road.
