UN investigators have accused South Sudanese authorities of plundering billions of dollars of their country's wealth as two thirds of its people face crisis-levels of hunger.

The report highlights that government spending on luxury items far exceeds investment in essential services like healthcare, and alleges that billions have been paid to companies linked to high-ranking officials for undelivered projects.

The South Sudanese government rejects the UN's findings, blaming the nation's economic difficulties on ongoing conflict, climate change, and declining oil revenues. Meanwhile, international humanitarian aid is being reduced, leaving millions of displaced and impoverished citizens with limited access to basic services.

These people are among more than four million in South Sudan who have been forced to flee armed conflicts. But here in Warab state, they haven't found a safe haven. This is the hardest situation we've ever been in. Some people's children have died because of hunger. There is no food or milk. I work in the market, but no one can buy anything. South Sudan's displacement crisis is one of the worst in Africa. Its armed conflicts seem endless and rights abuses are widespread. Almost everyone lives in extreme poverty. UN investigators say it's a human rights and humanitarian disaster that's driven by systematic looting by South Sudan's leaders. Corruption is killing South Sudanese. It's not incidental. It's the engine of South Sudan's collapse, hollowing out its economy, gutting institutions, fueling conflict and condemning its people to hunger and preventable death. In a new report, the UN's Human Rights Commission for South Sudan says last year the office of President Salva Kiir spent 55 times more on luxury cars than his government spent on public health care. And it says companies connected to this man, Vice President Benjamin Bolmel, have been paid about $1.7 billion for road construction work that was never done. His spokesperson declined to comment. This government primary school barely has walls and it's a similar story of deprivation in schools and hospitals all over the country. Wealth is more visible in the capital, Juba. It's mostly from oil. The report says for every 40 barrels sold, the revenue of only one funds public services. The government says the report's based on incorrect figures and that economic problems have been caused by conflict, climate change and falling oil revenues. Paulino Kalong Achor says he needs all the help he can get. He's one of the thousands of people injured in armed conflict every year and he says only the Red Cross has helped him. The government doesn't give me anything. I lost all my family in the conflict and also from hunger. This government's only looking after some people. They take the little money we have and we remain with nothing for our children. International humanitarian aid is facing steep cuts and many programmes are closing. The government says it's working for the well-being of its citizens. The investigators say corruption's converting South Sudan's national wealth into private power.
