Manufacturers take "Made in the USA" very seriously, but some labels are not as honest as advertised. Here's what to know about things claiming to be American-made.

A growing number of products labeled 'Made in the USA' are being scrutinized for not meeting federal requirements that mandate all or virtually all components be sourced and manufactured domestically. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken action against companies misusing the label, notifying dozens of businesses and prompting lawsuits from consumers. 

Industry leaders and consumer advocates stress the importance of truthful labeling, emphasizing that deceptive claims harm both consumers and businesses that adhere to the rules. Recent regulatory changes have strengthened enforcement, making it easier to identify and address violations.

Some products labeled 'Made in the USA' may not be honest

WeatherTech controls all aspects of its manufacturing supply chain, including domestically sourced petroleum and materials for its molds. All our tooling is made from either aluminum from America or steel from America. The Federal Trade Commission requires that products advertised as made in the USA be all or virtually all manufactured domestically, and the ingredients or components must be made and sourced in the United States. Since 2021, the agency has notified 57 companies about improperly using the label. Other companies have faced lawsuits by consumers. Reynolds Aluminum Foil is currently fighting a class action suit claiming it's falsely advertised as made in the USA, even though its main raw material, bauxite, is not mined in the U.S. Reynolds says the claims have no merit, and it will defend the case. Made in the USA can cost more, frequently it does, and certainly now consumers are fearful that it will. For that reason, it's really important that the phrase is non-deceptive. Laura Smith is legal director for the consumer watchdog group Truth in Advertising. This harms not only consumers, but it harms honest businesses trying to compete with companies who are lying to consumers about the origin of their products. With tariffs putting more attention on where products are coming from and how much they cost, David McNeil says keeping companies honest is more important than ever. Being deceptive and saying it's made in America when it's not is not fair, and so people should just tell the truth. Truth in Advertising successfully lobbied the FTC to create new rules in 2021 codifying the all-or-virtually-all standard, which has made it easier to find violators.
