The Garmin Autoland system, designed for smaller general aviation aircraft, can automatically identify the nearest airport, communicate with air traffic control, and land the plane if pilots are incapacitated. The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident, which marks the first known use of the system in an actual emergency.

But less than an hour earlier, after taking off from Aspen, they encountered a problem. We lost pressure vision. Air traffic controllers tried repeatedly to reach the pilots before hearing this. Emergency auto landing 19 minutes on runway 30. The plane is equipped with this Garmin Autoland system. The company operating the King Air says the system activated automatically when the cabin pressure dropped suddenly. The pilots remained conscious, but due to the complexity of the specific situation, let the system take over to automatically land the plane. Flight instructor Adam Lendi shot this video after the plane landed. It stopped on the runway, it turned the engines off, and then it let the rescue crews get in and do their job. CBS Mornings was the first to see the system in action as it was going through FAA certification in 2019. It includes an emergency button passengers can push if a pilot becomes incapacitated. Once activated, the system identifies the closest airport where it can safely land. It radios the tower, declares an emergency, and updates passengers on the landing. We tried it out with Garmin test pilot Eric Sargent. How confident are you in this system to safely land anytime it's activated? Really confident. I would put my family in here in a heartbeat and be confident that if they push the button, if I wasn't around, that it would get them down safely. Now the FAA is investigating what happened here. This Autoland system is specifically designed for smaller general aviation private planes, and it is now available in several different models of those small planes. Adriana? Wow. All right.
