Back-to-school season is in full swing across the country, which means summer camp season is coming to a close. For many kids, camps are a home away from home, but for some, they are the only home they know. Elaine Quijano reports.

Camp Homeward Bound, located in Haverstraw, New York, serves children from New York City homeless and domestic violence shelters. The camp, established by the Coalition for the Homeless over four decades ago and funded by donations, provides a structured and nurturing environment where children can experience a sense of belonging and normalcy. 

Campers participate in activities that foster confidence and social connections, offering them a respite from the challenges they face in their daily lives. Counselors, some of whom were once campers themselves, help guide and support the children, encouraging them to build self-esteem and hope for the future.

Sleepaway camp offers haven for homeless kids

Each day at Camp Homeward Bound starts with a ritual for campers whose lives are anything but routine. These children come to camp from New York City homeless and domestic violence shelters. What do you see when you see some of these young campers? Honestly, I really see myself, especially the shy ones. CeCe Johnson is 17. She's a counselor and was eight when she first arrived as a camper herself. As I grew up in the shelter, I realized that I didn't have an actual home. Coming to camp made me realize that this camp could be my home for the time being. Camp Homeward Bound was started 41 years ago by the not-for-profit organization, the Coalition for the Homeless, and is funded through donations. Everly McEntarfer has served as camp director for 19 years. We've had kids here who have experienced abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse. Some of the kids haven't been in shelter for six years, and they really lose their childhood. Childhood is cherished here. We caught up with 11-year-old Elijah Martinez on just his fourth time riding a bike. What's the difference here compared to where you stay? Where I stay, like, no one lives near me. All of my friends are, like, far away. But to here, like, I get to train with my friends. What's that like for you? It feels comforting, because I have someone to actually be with. Connection isn't the only benefit. Activities boost confidence as well. Perfect. Nice. You got it. Got it. Good stuff. It's like saying to someone, you're courageous, just to help build them up. After two weeks, the campers board buses for the ride back to the reality of their lives in New York City. And you're coming back, aren't you? The bus. Yeah. Okay. Yet Cece Johnson says the confidence she gained here has stayed with her. She plans to become a pediatric neurologist. I hope they realize that they do not deserve what they're going through. Yes, some things can be hard, but things will get better. For these kids, childhood may not be ideal. But here, they have a chance to claim part of it for themselves.
