The Henderson Silver Knights are hosting their fifth annual Lucky Launch event at Lee's Family Forum, inviting fans to bring stuffed animals to be thrown onto the ice after the team's first goal. The collected toys will be donated to local children in need through a partnership with the Salvation Army. 

The event, which has gathered over 25,000 toys in the past four years, features special themed jerseys, opportunities for fans to purchase plush toys at the venue, and an online auction for autographed jerseys. The initiative aims to engage the community and support families during the holiday season.

Hockey is back and hockey and giving back come together tonight with a fan favorite tradition. The Henderson Silver Knights are hosting their fifth annual Lucky Launch when they take on the San Diego Gulls at Lee's Family Forum. Joining us are Brian McCormack, Silver Knights broadcaster and Abby Gahn, senior manager of marketing for the Henderson Silver Knights, as you can see are in the house. How are you guys doing? Doing great. We're really excited. We have a big night tonight and it's Christmas time so no better time than to be sitting with you guys. Yeah, we're thrilled to have you in and we also, Jessica and I both love the Lucky Launch and it's something so cool to behold. For anyone at home who's not familiar with it, what is the premise, what does it do and what's that, what's that, what does it look like? Well it's a phenomenal spectacle we have every year. It's our fifth annual presented by America First Credit Union and really for the fans it's very simple. We want you to bring as many stuffed animals to the game tonight at Lee's Family Forum as you can. When the Silver Knights score their first goal, you're gonna throw them onto the ice hat trick style and then we collect those toys and donate to them to local kids in need this year working with the Salvation Army. So it's a great spectacle, it's fun for the players and for the fans and gives as many people as possible a chance to give something during the Christmas season at the same time. Yeah, I mean it looks like so much fun. So when that first goal is scored, it turns into quite a scene. So what do you guys think makes this so fun for fans? I think you know everyone just gets to be a part of the game and that anticipation. We're always excited for a goal but that first goal for tonight is always very highly anticipated. Everyone's waiting on the edge of their seats and so once that happens and the teddy bears start flying, it's a really fun night. Yeah, that is a spectacle to behold but all these toys that land on the ice, they get swept up. Where do they go to, who benefits from all this? So it is the Salvation Army that we're working with this year and over the course of the last four years we've collected over 25,000 so it's a great opportunity for a contribution. Every year we're looking for more so the Salvation Army is working with us tonight and you know friends that can, it's great if you can put them in a little plastic bag, it keeps them clean that way we don't have to launder them before they go off to the Salvation Army. Good point. We'll have a whole crew of people on the ice to sweep them up as fast as we can and like Abby said, there's just that anticipation during the game, those butterflies in your stomach waiting for the big moment to happen. And everyone's waiting for that too, waiting to just like toss it onto the ice. Oh yes, well for fans who maybe show up and don't have a toy with them, are there ways for them to participate? Absolutely, we are going to have these very cute horseshoe plushes available for sale on the concourse so fans can get one for $15 or if they want to have one to throw and one to keep for themselves, two for $20 on the concourse so we'll have these available so that way everyone can have something to throw onto the ice. And those will benefit the Salvation Army in part as well. Perfect, I mean the whole night is special right down to the outfits, you know, the shirts that the guys are gonna be wearing, special shirts. What is happening with the outfit tonight? Yeah, fashion counts too, right? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, you know, the Silver Knights, having Henderson be our home has really been important and trying to be a big part of that community and make an impact on the families, the youth there is really important to us. I mean from a player's perspective, I know that they're focused on the game, is this something that they love to see as well? They're desperate to get that first goal anyway for the game? Yes, and they talk about it too, it's who's gonna be the one to score it. So Jonas Rombjörg, we've had four of these, he's scored the goal twice but you talk to players like big moments in their careers, they'll talk about overtime games or playoff goals they've scored but guys who have scored a teddy bear toss, they care about that because again it's just such a spectacle and it's a feather in their cap. I mean we get to give that kind of joy to children and fans of all ages really, I mean that's a feather in your cap when you're the one who gets to set that off.
