Heavy rainfall is expected to impact the Southwest US, particularly Southern California, as moisture from the remnants of tropical storm Mario moves into the region. The rain is forecast to begin in southern areas and progress northward, starting late Wednesday and continuing through Thursday, before tapering off on Friday.

Rainfall totals are predicted to reach one inch in widespread areas, with mountain regions possibly seeing up to two inches. Major cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego could experience significant rainfall, though temperatures are expected to remain warm. The heaviest rain is likely in the mountains of Southern California and parts of Arizona.

Welcome back to AccuWeather Ahead. Overall, we're going to be tracking more heavy rainfall continuing in the forecast here across the Southwest and Southern parts of California. The overall timeline is going to be Wednesday night. So throughout the afternoon on Wednesday, we're going to stay dry. But late Wednesday, we're going to see these showers pushing in from South to North. So the farther South you are, the earlier your rainfall is going to begin on Wednesday. So Wednesday evening, Wednesday night is when the rain starts to move in. It's going to persist throughout the day on Thursday, and then the rain will slowly start to taper off on Friday morning. And this is leftover tropical moisture from what was Hurricane Mario. So how much rainfall are we expected to see? Well, take a look at this. Widespread one inch totals, even some one to two inch totals there in the mountains across Southern parts of California. So Los Angeles, San Diego, up to an inch of total rainfall will be possible, but we can't rule out the possibility of more rainfall there for the Los Angeles Metro, especially. The record to beat for a September afternoon for total rainfall in one day is a little bit over three inches. That was set back in the 1930s. So a very old rainfall record. We'll see if we can challenge that here as we head throughout your Wednesday afternoon, or your Thursday, I should say. Wednesday, you can see the rainfall slowly starting to work its way into the forecast. Overall, it's going to stay warm. So no real concerns there. Wednesday across the rest of the region, you can see, look at the temperatures before the rain moves in. We'll be in the low 90s there for Los Angeles and triple digits for both Fresno and Bakersfield. 83 in San Diego, still plenty warm for this time of year. But on Thursday, here comes that rainfall. Once again, primarily the heaviest rainfall totals in the mountains there across Southern California with the heaviest rain across Southern parts of Arizona as we end the Thursday afternoon.
