The Quebec government has asked schools and daycares to stop using the HopHop app to co-ordinate student pickups after significant cybersecurity flaws were brought to light.

Concerns have been raised about the security of school-related apps in Quebec after two parents, who are also cybersecurity experts, discovered that the HopHop app exposed sensitive personal information. The app, used by at least 500 daycares and schools for arranging pickups, allowed access to data such as phone numbers and children's pictures.

Following the discovery, the Quebec government instructed schools and daycares to stop using HopHop. Experts warn that such vulnerabilities could lead to phishing attacks and other scams. HopHop stated that, according to their analysis, no data has been stolen and that they are working to address the security issue.

If you're a parent or a caregiver, you probably know of apps like this, HopHop, which arranges daycare or school pickups. There are other apps that allow you to message teachers or even look at your child's school reports. These apps sometimes have some very crucial information like your address, your name, even your child's pictures. So when you're using these apps, how safe is that crucial personal information you share? The information is at the mercy of the people that are making the application. In the case of HopHop, two parents who happened to be cybersecurity experts proved the information was accessible. The application is used in Quebec by at least 500 daycares and schools to arrange pickups. Khadjo Kanada says the parents were able to access the personal information of thousands of parents and children, including phone numbers and pictures. Now the Quebec government has ordered daycares and schools to stop using it. When we are using those type of application, whether it's for the school or in our personal life, we have to be aware of the risk that we take. So what are the risks and what can we do to protect ourselves when we're using these types of apps? When these flaws are discovered and a cyber attack occurs, they have access to all this data. They can change the bus schedules, they can change the grades, access maybe the child's profiles. And then this could be reused to do phishing attacks and other types of scams against the parents. The first step is to reduce the information that any company has on you by limiting it to using either first or last name. Multi-factor authentication is a given on any application. HopHop says that according to their analysis, no data has been stolen and that they're working hard to fix the vulnerability.
