Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy's legal woes looked set to continue as prosecutors on Tuesday said they would seek indictments against him, his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and nine others for alleged witness tampering in the Libya campaign funding case.

French financial prosecutors are seeking an indictment against former President Nicolas Sarkozy on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit fraud and concealment of witness tampering. The case centers on the retraction of testimony by Ziad Takiyahdin, who had previously claimed to deliver cash from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to Sarkozy's campaign, but later withdrew his statements, raising suspicions of interference.

Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni Sarkozy, and several others may also face indictment in connection with the case. The specifics of the alleged actions have not yet been detailed by prosecutors, and further information may be released if the case is referred to a criminal court.

The truth will come out loud and clear, loud and clear. But that promise from Ziad Takiyahdin never came true. A key witness in a case against Nicolas Sarkozy, Takiyahdin claimed that he helped deliver 5 million euros in cash from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to the former French president's chief of staff in 2006 and 2007. But in 2020, the French and Lebanese businessman suddenly backtracked, retracting his statements, prompting suspicions that he had been paid off. Now, financial prosecutors say they are seeking an indictment of Sarkozy on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit fraud and concealment of witness tampering. They say Sarkozy's wife, the model and singer Carla Bruni Sarkozy, could also be indicted, but just on the first conspiracy charge. Many others are also facing possible indictments related to Takiyahdin's reversal. Takiyahdin died this past September in Beirut, just two days before Sarkozy was found guilty of seeking illegal funding from Libya and Gaddafi for his first presidential campaign. The former French president, who was recently set free after serving just 20 days of a five-year prison sentence, has called Takiyahdin a great manipulator. Aren't you ashamed to give a platform to a man who's been to prison, who's been convicted numerous times for defamation, and who's a liar? That's not my idea of public service. It's a disgrace. Prosecutors have not spelled out in detail what Sarkozy, his wife and the nine others are suspected of doing in this latest witness tampering case, but specifics could be forthcoming if an investigating judge decides to refer the case to a criminal court.
