The report notes that after Wagner's official exit from Mali, Russia's Ministry of Defence quickly deployed Afrika Korps, marking a shift to direct state control and a more overt Russian presence.

The Afrika Korps is directly linked to Russia's defence ministry and military intelligence, signaling a strategic and long-term commitment to the region. The report concludes that this move ends the era of plausible deniability and cements Russia's military and diplomatic influence in West African countries such as Mali.

It's Russia's latest power move in the Sahel. A new report by the Timbuktu Institute revealing Russia has shifted from the notorious Wagner mercenary group to a new state-run force called Afrika Korps. Three and a half years after Wagner fighters first arrived in Mali, they officially exited on June 6th. Hailing its alleged success in the West African country, Wagner took to Telegram to say that its mission was complete and that it was returning home. Almost immediately, Russia's Ministry of Defence stepped in, deploying Afrika Korps to take over, this time fully under the state's control. One month on, the Timbuktu Institute has released its report, in which it concludes that Russia is cementing its military and diplomatic influence in countries like Mali. Unlike Wagner's shadowy private status, Afrika Korps is run directly by Moscow, linked to Russia's defence ministry and military intelligence. According to the report, the deployment of Afrika Korps ends the era of denial and signals a bold, strategic and long-term Russian presence in West Africa.
