He called Rubio an extraordinary friend, saying his visit is testament to the strength of the Israeli-American alliance. That alliance tested last week when an Israeli airstrike targeted a Hamas negotiating team in Qatar, a major regional U.S. ally home to some 10,000 American troops. The airstrike failed to kill senior Hamas officials, but killed a number of Hamas relatives and aides and one Qatari guard. President Trump was, quote, unhappy. Today, Qatar's prime minister calling it state terrorism, demanding the international community, quote, punish Israel for its crimes, ahead of a major summit of Arab and Muslim leaders tomorrow. None of this has slowed Israel's latest offensive to take Gaza City, where airstrikes have intensified in recent days, targeting high-rise buildings that Israel says are being used by Hamas. The Israeli military demanding a full evacuation of that city, and that's around one million people. The U.N. estimates over 100,000 have fled since August, the cycle of displacement and despair seen in the families fleeing south today. Secretary Rubio is expected to meet with families of hostages to underscore America's commitment to bringing their loved ones home. He then flies here to the U.K., Jorica, where President Trump is expected on Tuesday for a state visit.
