Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said retail investors are largely excluded from the "huge opportunity" available in private markets. Tenev spoke with Carlyle Co-Founder & Co-Chairman David Rubenstein for an episode of Bloomberg Wealth.

Robinhood CEO has described the limited access that retail investors have to private markets as a significant issue. He noted that much of the appreciation and opportunity in sectors such as artificial intelligence now occurs before companies go public, making it difficult for individual investors to participate in early growth.

He emphasized that opportunities for large returns in public markets are becoming increasingly rare, as many companies reach high valuations before listing. Robinhood is working to address this gap, but the CEO characterized the current lack of access as both an iniquity and a missed opportunity for retail investors.

I'm a person who uses an account at Robin Hood but I don't really know what to do with one hundred thousand. Where would you recommend they put one hundred thousand dollars today. Yeah. So if I was maybe not exactly in my position but a similar position I think one of the biggest opportunities also a big tragedy is that private markets are where the bulk of the interesting appreciation and exposure is nowadays. I mean if you think about A.I. all of the foundational A.I. labs you know you look at open A.I. and throbbing X.A.I. I mean Google Gemini is perhaps an exception but Google is already such a large company. If you want early exposure or even medium to late stage exposure as a retail investor you're largely shut out. So in the days of a technology company going public at a valuation in the hundreds of millions and then giving you a thousand or ten thousand X return in the public markets are getting increasingly more and more rare. So I think private markets are a huge opportunity. It's a shame that it's so difficult to get exposure in the U.S. We're obviously working to solve that. But that's where I would point to as like the greatest remaining iniquity and opportunity in our capital markets.
