The incident, which occurred near the city's new metro system, left a car dangerously close to the edge but resulted in no injuries. Authorities attributed the sinkhole to a leak in a tunnel for the metro system running beneath the affected road. The hospital was deemed safe due to its deep foundations and retaining wall, while police operations were halted as a precaution.

Well, Ernest, this all unfolded shortly after seven local time this morning, and remarkably no one was injured, but it came incredibly close. In video posted to social media, tarmac and concrete can be seen collapsing into the road, creating a 30 metre wide by 50 metre deep hole. Then, just seconds later, more of it collapses as the cars try to reverse out of danger. You can see the grey pickup truck, which is left dangling after a third section of road gets sucked into the crater. Bangkok's governor has revealed the cause was due to a leak in a tunnel for the city's new metro system, which runs underneath the road. The hospital next to the sinkhole is safe due to its 60 metre deep foundations and retaining wall. However, use of the police station has been temporarily suspended.
