Founded by coach Andriy Yevchuk, who fled Ukraine as a teenager, the academy helps displaced individuals maintain a connection to their homeland.

The club, unable to play in its home city due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now supports both recent exiles and established Ukrainians in Berlin. Through football, the academy offers hope and continuity to a community facing an uncertain future.

Representing exiles in exile: the Shakhtar Academy Berlin

Football coach Andriy Yevchuk was just 15 when he fled Ukraine with his mother and sister three years ago. His father stayed behind to fight. For many Ukrainians in Germany, it can be difficult not to lose touch with home. But this football academy is a home away from home, a local franchise of one of Ukraine's most recognisable, most successful clubs. The badge holds weight. Shakhtar Donetsk haven't played in their home city for more than a decade after the early phase of Russia's war with Ukraine forced the club to leave. And so an exiled club offers a home for the exiled community in Berlin, as well as for Ukrainians who are at home here. It's a community whose home country faces an uncertain future.
