Jane Goodall, the pioneering primatologist and conservationist, has died at the age of 91. Goodall began her groundbreaking research 65 years ago in what is now Tanzania, where she closely studied chimpanzees and revealed their complex emotional lives and ability to use tools. Her immersive approach to research helped bridge the perceived gap between humans and other animals, leading her to become a respected voice in environmentalism and animal rights advocacy. Goodall was recently honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions. She encouraged individuals to make conscious choices to help the environment and animal welfare, emphasizing that even small actions can make a difference.

Remembering Jane Goodall

65 years ago, a 26-year-old Jane Goodall traveled from Britain to what is now Tanzania to begin a lifelong study of the habits of chimpanzees. So thorough was her research that she came to know chimps perhaps as well as any human in history. Goodall discovered that, like humans, chimps have emotions and form long-term bonds. She found that chimps can make and use tools, and that many of their activities are not unlike ours. Her immersive studies, she all but lived with the chimps, established Goodall as a respected environmentalist and made her a storied figure in the realm of animal intelligence. She found that chimps can experience pleasure, sadness, and fear, and that the line between human beings and other animal life isn't nearly as sharp as once thought. Goodall's work ultimately made her an advocate for the rights of animals. And earlier this year, she was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by outgoing President Joe Biden. A few years ago, she spoke with Sunday Morning's Seth Doan. Everybody can do something. I mean, when you go shopping, you can ask yourself, hmm, did this product harm the environment when it was made? Was it cruel to animals? Is it cheap? Why is it cheap? Is it because of unfair wages? You're asking people to do a lot. Well, why not? You don't have to do it all. You know, even if you just pick one thing, like eating less meat, you just do something. Conservationist Jane Goodall died Wednesday of natural causes in Los Angeles while on a speaking tour. She was 91 years old.
