Kansas City Chiefs players are drawing criticism for publicly supporting teammate Rashee Rice, who is serving a suspension and jail time for his involvement in a high-speed car crash.

Rice is currently serving a six-game suspension following a high-speed crash in Dallas that injured six people, two seriously. The attorney for one of the crash victims criticized the players' show of support, calling it 'cruel' and 'cynical,' and argued that it disregards the damage caused by Rice's actions.

Rice pleaded guilty to felony racing and causing serious bodily injury, receiving five years probation and 30 days in jail to be served intermittently. The civil case for one victim has been resolved, but the victim has not yet received any of the $1.1 million settlement. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid described the players' gesture as a show of support for their teammate.

The attorney for one of those crash victims had harsh words for those Chiefs players. Fox4's David Centenery spoke with that attorney and joins us live, David. Yes, Stephen, Heather, a whole lot of comments rolling out on social media, some calling this tone-deaf, especially football fans here in North Texas who are a bit familiar with this case. Travis Kelsey, one of a handful of Kansas City Chiefs players wearing a shirt before Sunday's game, reading free four, a reference to wide receiver and teammate number four Rasheed Rice, who's serving a six-game suspension. And it's rubbing salt in the wounds of Rasheed's victims. Attorney Mark Linehan represents one victim, Rice, injured during a high-speed crash in Dallas in March 2024, involving six vehicles. I represent Catherine. Catherine was just like everybody else on Easter weekend. That was on one of the highways here in DFW, 75. Linehan's client, a passenger in this minivan. Lamborghini going 119 miles an hour, went on the shoulder and then came back, clipped her, spun her, and her and five other people were all hurt. On July 17th, Rice pleaded guilty to felony racing on the highway and felony accident causing serious bodily injury. Rice sentenced to five years probation and to 30 days in jail. The jail time to be served sporadically throughout the next five years. Judge Ernest White added jail time because he said it bothered him that Rice fled the scene without checking on victims. Completely abandoned their victims, yes. Referencing the t-shirts worn by some of Rice's teammates, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid says the display is nothing more than support. They love the kid and want him to feel part of it in their own way. It's cruel. It's cruel. It's cynical. It is deceitful. Linehan, however, believes this support disregards damage. And it's just so narrow-focused. I get that Kelsey is worried about the performance of the team and loves his team and loves his brother. I get that. But he also knows that Rashi screwed up and hurt people and has accepted responsibility as best he could for that. Linehan says his client's civil case is resolved and is currently in the collections phase. However, he says his client has not received any money of the 1.1 million dollar settlement with Rice.
