Demonstrators argue that the government has failed to address a surge in violent crime, including paid killings and widespread extortion, which has resulted in more than 900 deaths this year, many of them young men.

The protests come as transport companies halt services to demand better protection, and experts warn that criminality is increasingly affecting daily life and the grassroots economy. President Boluarte has stated that protests will not resolve the issues, while police have attempted to discourage demonstrations. Protesters, however, maintain that the government is disconnected from the needs of ordinary citizens and is not doing enough to ensure their safety.

She's done nothing. There's paid killings and corruption is continuing in the government and Congress. We are out here demanding they leave. Delinquency is growing. It's the most pressing issue for Peruvians, says the Crime and Violence Observatory. More than 900 people were killed this year, 40% of them men under 30 years old. But President Dina Boloarte said this week that protesting won't resolve anything. Police tried to discourage demonstrations. It's completely shameless. The political class is completely disconnected from the needs of the people. More than 5,000 Peruvians have been killed since Boloarte took office in 2022. Many didn't or couldn't pay extortion fees. Police say in the last eight months they've received more than 18,000 reports on extortions. Protesters here say they're angry at police because instead of trying to silence them, they should be protecting their primary neighborhoods. It's now a common scene, terrified passengers taking cover as bus drivers are attacked. This week hundreds of transport companies stopped services protesting the lack of protection. Experts say criminality is affecting nearly everyone. It's the country's main problem and the trend is getting worse. It affects people's daily lives, especially poor people, and it savagely affects transport workers. In economic terms, it's becoming a phenomenon of destruction of the small grassroots entrepreneurial economy.
