Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in Liverpool, the day before the start of the governing Labour Party’s annual conference.

Pro-Palestine demonstrators in Liverpool were arrested after holding signs supporting Palestine Action, a group the British government has classified as a terrorist organisation. Protesters acknowledged the risk of arrest, stating their actions were intended to highlight concerns about free speech and to protest the government's ban on the group. 

The arrests took place as police read the protesters their rights and escorted them away. Demonstrators said their goal was to create public embarrassment for the government, particularly during the Labour Party conference, and cited internal opposition to the ban among Labour Party members.

All the protesters here are holding signs saying exactly the same thing. I oppose genocide. I support Palestine action. And everyone here knows that by holding those signs they are liable. They're probably actually expecting to be arrested. Why? Well, because the British government has designated Palestine Action, a campaign group, as a terrorist organisation. And so doing what these people are doing here is a criminal offence. So you are fully aware that by saying you support Palestine Action you are liable to be arrested? Yes, I am. I am indeed. So why are you taking that step? I'm prepared to be arrested because it's a question of supporting Palestine. It's also a question of free speech. And free speech is under attack in this country by this government. And what is your message to this Starmer government? The Starmer government should stop banning organisations like Palestine Action. They are not terrorists. You are a terrorist. You are a terrorist for supporting Israel and the genocide that they're taking place because of you. So the police are now making their first arrests. Each of the protesters has been read their rights. And once they've been read their rights the police are taking them away across the bridge and into waiting police cars. For the demonstrators, the protesters, the people who are in support of Palestine Action, this is actually what they want. They want mass civilian arrests to cause acute embarrassment for Keir Starmer's government on the first day of the Labour Party conference. And they say that 71% of Labour Party members oppose the ban on Palestine Action and think that Keir Starmer has done completely the wrong thing. Rory Shallins, Al Jazeera, in Liverpool.
