Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations, but his speech was preceded by a walkout involving dozens of delegates. The protest occurred as Netanyahu approached the podium, with reports suggesting the demonstration could have been larger if more delegates had been present.

During his speech, Netanyahu criticized countries that recently recognized a Palestinian state and defended Israel's actions in Gaza. He made strong statements rejecting the creation of a Palestinian state and emphasized Israel's efforts to protect civilians. The event highlighted deep divisions among U.N. member states regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Dozens of delegates walk out as Netanyahu speaks at U.N.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations in the last hour, but not before dozens of delegates stood up and walked out in protest before he began speaking. Netanyahu continued and addressed those remaining in the hall, as well as Palestinians and Israeli hostages still in Gaza. His Israeli officials set up loudspeakers along the border with Gaza for everyone to hear his speech. Scripps News Deputy Political Director Joe St. George is joining me now live from the Capitol. Joe was also listening to Netanyahu's speech. While not surprising, it was still really stunning to see so many delegates walk out in protest at the United Nations. Well, good morning, Stephanie, and I think we'll play that footage as soon as we can play it back for you of the delegates getting up and walking out before Benjamin Netanyahu had a chance to speak before them. In fact, Al Jazeera is reporting that the walkout would have been even bigger if Netanyahu wasn't first up today. This is, again, some of the pictures that we played for you live here on Scripps News earlier, Netanyahu approaching the podium, and then the walkout commenced. Netanyahu was first up this morning. Here you see the walkout. If he was speaking a little bit later today when more of the delegates had assembled already, again, Al Jazeera reporting that the expectation is it would have been even larger. To some degree, we should not have been surprised by delegates walking out. What have we seen in recent weeks? A number of new countries making a decision, a significant and notable foreign policy decision for their country to recognize the Palestinian state. On September 16, 2025, I'm just going to read a press release that says Israel has committed genocide in Gaza Strip. U.N. Commission finds that press release coming from Geneva. So this idea of a protest with a Netanyahu speech, to some degree, was always expected. And then you had the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu himself, delivering a fiery speech from the podium once things settled down. I just want to read some of these quotes for you that really are reverberating around the world this morning. Netanyahu really took on the leaders who recognized a two-state solution this past week, including Britain, France, Canada. Murdering Jews pays off, is what Netanyahu said. Netanyahu says Israel's quote will not commit national suicide by allowing the creation of a Palestinian state. He said, did the Nazis ask the Jews to kindly leave, go out, and contended that Israel's doing everything they can to get civilians out of harm's way. Again, just a remarkable moment at the United Nations in New York. It's been a week of world leaders. President Trump spoke at the U.N. earlier this week. But Benjamin Netanyahu certainly delivering his case for why Israel should continue to do exactly what it's doing, even though, Stephanie, we saw dozens of countries have a very different view of the state of affairs in the Middle East. Again, a remarkable moment at the U.N. just within the last hour.
