Private prisons see boom as Trump steps up migrant crackdown

The U.S.'s crackdown on migrants has been a boon for the private detention industry. Many facilities are now scrambling to increase their capacity by opening new centers, reopening closed ones. In the state of Kansas, the Leavenworth Midwest Regional Reception Center has become a test case. After shutting down in 2021 amid allegations of abuse and mismanagement, the facility is on the verge of reopening. The plan is to detain illegal immigrants that are awaiting deportation back to their country of origin or third countries. I love that mission because, first of all, it's 300 jobs for local folks. It's also, you know, tons of revenue for the city, not just the increased property taxes. It's sort of frustrating that, you know, we're all ready to open and, you know, three Democrats on the city commission don't like Donald Trump, so they're suing to keep it shut down. Private prison operator CoreCivic, which owns Leavenworth, has won a contract from the U.S. government to detain migrants here for $4.2 million per month. But opposition from the community and a bureaucratic huddle has delayed its reopening. They had a lot of facility deaths, employee injuries because of short staffing and dangerous conditions. That's going to be exacerbated with the immigration population because of language barriers and because of the difficulty in following up about reporting abuse. People got a taste for what this mass deportation would look like, and they don't like it. While an impasse remains in place in Leavenworth, a nationwide argument is ongoing, and that is whether the social price of profiting from migrant detention is a price worth paying.
