In tonight's Eye on America, we revisit a political odd couple first introduced on the CBS Evening News on this day last year during the run-up to the presidential election. Major Garrett reunited with them, though you should know it was before the killing last week of Charlie Kirk. One word or phrase to describe America today? Amazing. Amazing place to live. We first met Lance Mosley, a MAGA loyalist, and Rodney Sadler, a political progressive. I'd have to say perilous. About a year ago on the Nantahala River in North Carolina. I'm not fond of Trump at all. I don't understand why everybody's so afraid of Trump. He's better for the country. They were part of a social experiment on political reconciliation, left and right pulling in the same direction, navigating differences. So we've disagreed on everything. You're Samsung, I'm Alfa. Yeah, we don't even agree on anything. Good to see you. Oh my gosh. We caught up with them again around the inauguration. Rodney, a pastor, hosted us in Charlotte. As of right now, I love what's going on. Lance's enthusiasm contrasted with Rodney's anxiety. I'm very much frightened that we won't have a democracy in four years. What's up with my brother? How are you doing? Good to see you, Rodney. Nearly eight months into the Trump presidency, we checked back, this time near Lance's home in Florida. The country has morale. We are pumped up. People are feeling more safe. The world is wanting to be around America again. Rodney. Yes. How do you feel? I feel as though this is far worse than the first time around. A quick flashpoint in our conversation? Mr. Trump's federal takeover of policing in the nation's capital. It's not making people safer, it's making people frightened. You should feel comfortable with having military. I don't feel comfortable with Donald Trump having any military power over anyone. Do you want the military in other cities? Absolutely. They are there to protect America. Well, they're there to protect who? Because black and brown folks don't feel comfortable with people roaming the streets with militarized weapons and guns. Immigration? Another dividing line. We're keeping drugs out. We're keeping the bad guys out. Like, we're getting control of the country, and I think that is great for everybody. What we need to do is fix immigration policy in the U.S. Then think about what enforcement should look like. We as Americans, we need to come together. One constant in all this? Rodney and Lance's admiration and respect for one another. So much so, they're starting a podcast together. The theme? Political rivals who remain good friends. I'm starting to recognize that there must be two narratives that are on two different tracks that are running through America. Because there's no way in the world that anyone I know would ever say that what's going on here is a good thing. Because I like him so much and I understand where he's at, I really do have empathy for him. Rodney and Lance, divided by politics, united in listening to and learning from each other.
