A shift in the jet stream from a highly amplified to a more zonal pattern is allowing warmer air to move northward across much of the United States. This change follows a period of aggressive Clipper systems that brought snow and cold to the upper Midwest, northern Tier, and Ohio Valley.

By later in the week, temperatures are forecast to be 10 to 25 degrees above average, with as many as 283 million people experiencing above-average highs. Some regions may even see record-breaking warmth as the pattern continues to build toward Christmas.

Look at our temperatures this afternoon. After what has been a very aggressive pattern across the upper Midwest in the northern Tier Ohio Valley of all these Clipper systems dropping, you know individual amounts of snow. We're finally starting to see a little bit of a warm up. And part of that reason is we're going from what's called a highly amplified pattern. Basically, the jet stream is very wavy to its flattening out now it's becoming slightly more zonal, and that's going to allow some of this warm air to start to creep into the north but over to the east where we do have all of that cold air that's sitting right now over that fresh snowpack too, especially that's where we're going to find some of the coldest temperatures. But tomorrow now we're talking 1020. 25 degrees above average and then only continues to build in as we head towards the second half of the week. In fact, look at Thursday. That's a huge switch from where we started off this week yesterday, and we're going to have 283 million of us with those highs above average. So warm that maybe by this time we're starting to break some records.
