Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are setting up barbed wire around their homes to protect themselves from Israeli settler attacks.

Palestinian residents in the old city of Hebron are taking extensive measures to protect their homes and families from repeated attacks by Israeli settlers. Many have installed metal barriers and barbed wire around their houses, creating cage-like structures, but say these efforts offer limited protection against violence and intimidation.

The city is divided into two sectors, with one under Israeli military control where thousands of Palestinians live alongside a smaller number of Israeli settlers. Residents describe frequent raids, property damage, and movement restrictions, particularly since the escalation of conflict in Gaza. Despite the presence of Israeli soldiers deployed to protect settlers, Palestinians report feeling increasingly vulnerable and say the cost of remaining on their land continues to rise.

To get groceries, Arij Jabari has to cross at least three Israeli military checkpoints and four barriers. And to protect her family from harm, she's had to turn her home into what looks like a prison. Metal barriers cover all the windows of the house, even the ones inside her bedroom. Still, Arij says it's impossible to feel safe. This is life in the old city of Hebron, south of the occupied West Bank, where Israeli settlers often attack Palestinians. This is just temporary. Barbed wire can't prevent all settlers' rocks. It can't save us from bullets or tear gas, often fired by Israeli forces, towards us. Arij often documents settler attacks, but that comes with a risk. Israeli soldiers raided the house, broke the windows with the rifle butts. They seized my camera and confiscated the memory card and told me not to film. They often yell at me if I open the windows, so I try to record discreetly. Samer Zahdi says every time he puts a lock on their door, Israeli forces destroy it. I keep this wooden block here and secure it like this to try and block settlers from entering, but sometimes they still break through anyway. Settlers jump inside, climb the stairs to the rooftops. They cause destruction and terrorize the children. In 1997, Hebron was divided into two parts, H1 and H2. H1 is under civil Palestinian control. H2 is under Israeli military control. More than 35,000 Palestinians live in the H2 area, along with 700 Israeli settlers. More than 1,500 soldiers are deployed by Israel to protect the settlers. But people here say it's the Palestinians who need protection. Settlers are free to use their cars. Palestinians are restricted to walking. Since the war on Gaza started, Israeli forces imposed night curfews on Palestinians living in some of the old city's neighborhoods. Many homes here have turned into cage-like structures. The cost of staying on their land is getting higher with each passing day.
