Astronauts from India, Poland, Hungary and the U.S. are returning from the International Space Station following the historic Axiom Mission 4 trip. CBS News' consultant Bill Harwood joins with more details.

The Axiom Mission 4 crew, consisting of astronauts from India, Poland, Hungary, and the United States, has undocked from the International Space Station and is en route back to Earth. The mission, organized by Houston-based Axiom Space, represents the fourth fully commercial flight to the ISS and is part of ongoing efforts to develop private space stations in cooperation with NASA.

During their stay, the crew conducted a range of scientific experiments and public outreach activities for their respective countries. The mission is considered a success in terms of its objectives, with the final milestone being a safe return and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California.

The Axiom 4 crew has undocked from the ISS, and right now, they're on their way back to Earth. CBS News Space Consultant Bill Hallward joins us now to talk about what's happening, and you got props, which is always good. Bill, talk to us about this ride home for these folks. Yeah, you know, they undocked a couple of hours ago. It's gonna take them almost a full day to reach the point where they can splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the Southern California coast, so they've got a little bit of off-duty time. The ship flies itself autonomously. Of course, it's a little bit cramped in that capsule that the four people are strapped into, but, you know, a fairly relaxing ride, a few last glimpses of Earth below, and if all goes well, they'll be landing early tomorrow morning off the coast of California. I think what we're looking at now, live pictures coming to us from this capsule. The controller can correct me if I'm wrong. What was so special about this mission? I think those might be taped replays, actually, that we're looking at onboard the space station. The significance of this flight was, this was the fourth fully commercial flight to the space station, sponsored by Houston-based Axiom Space. They're trying to gain experience. They're working with NASA to do that. They hope to build their own space station before the end of the decade, and to have a commercial outpost available once the International Space Station is retired. So all of these flights by Axiom are major steps in that direction, and so in that sense, it's a historic step forward in the sense of getting more private astronauts into low-Earth orbit, and that, of course, is the goal here with NASA's cooperation. Yeah, and if we think back, the Axiom launch was delayed several times, so now that they were able to make it, they're on their way back, it was historic. Has it yet been a success, or does that depend on, I guess, if and when they land safely? Well, you know, any space mission, you gotta get them up and you gotta get them down safely, so it's not over till it's over, as they say, but in terms of their mission objectives, I think it was hugely successful for Axiom Space and for the station crew. These four guest astronauts carried out a wide variety of experiments, did a lot of public outreach for their home countries. That's India, Turkey, and Hungary. India, Turkey, and Hungary, I get these confused all the time. That's not quite right, but it was a very successful mission on almost every stage, so I think they're very pleased with it, and they're looking forward to getting them back down safely.
