One year after Thomas Crooks, a 20-year-old community college graduate, attempted to assassinate then-candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, authorities have yet to determine his motive. Crooks, who had no known history of political radicalization or violence, was killed by a Secret Service sniper after wounding Trump, killing a volunteer firefighter, and injuring two others.

Investigations revealed Crooks was leading a seemingly normal life, applying to transfer to a four-year engineering program while also researching explosives and firearms. Despite ongoing efforts by the FBI, the reasons behind Crooks' actions remain unknown, and his family has declined to comment.

Motive still a mystery a year after Trump assassination attempt

Tonight, a lingering mystery. One year ago, a recent community college graduate opened fire on then-candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Within seconds, Thomas Crooks was shot dead by a Secret Service sniper. Investigators say Crooks acted alone. But the question remains, why did he do it? Here's CBS's Scott McFarlane. We have millions and millions of people. Thomas Crooks was just 20 years old with no history of political radicalization or violence. Thomas Crooks. An engineering student who impressed his teachers with big plans for his future, according to his former professor, Patricia Thompson. But I thought he was a star student. He had his head on straight and he was on a path for success. But when Crooks' path changed. Right here, right on the ridge. He's going down! Shooting and wounding President Trump, killing volunteer firefighter Corey Comperatore and injuring two more at a campaign rally near Pittsburgh. Crooks was killed by a Secret Service sniper. This is my audience for the persuasion speech. In the months before the incident, he was seemingly leading two lives. CBS News uncovered email showing last year Crooks was applying to transfer to a four-year engineering program, while at the same time, designing a bomb. In between the two, Crooks ordered a chemical compound called nitromethane, which is flammable and explosive. He followed up when the shipment was late. He perused websites about firearms, tactical gear, ammunition. And then on December 6th, 2023, internet logs show Crooks scanning a webpage about Trump and one minute later, reading about AR-15s, the same weapon he took to target practice at a nearby shooting range before using one in the Butler attack. Tristan Radcliffe says images of Crooks from that day in July show a physical transformation. What I would see him from like elementary school to when I last seen him at college, he would always have like tight denim jeans, glasses, short hair. And then just to see him like that, like, oh my goodness. And the mystery over why he did it haunts those close to Crooks. It's tragic, you know, he was a good guy. It's tragic, you know, he did kill somebody and you know, that's just unforgivable. An FBI investigation into the shooting is still ongoing and there's a hope that they can help figure out some of the motive for Thomas Crooks. As for his parents, we check with them in person and through attorneys and the lawyers say the family does not want to comment. Scott McFarlane, CBS News, Washington.
