Trump’s approach combines increased military support for Ukraine with economic penalties, similar to measures previously used against Venezuela. The move is designed to pressure both Russia and its trading partners to seek a resolution to the conflict.

After trying to take a diplomatic route with Russia, Donald Trump is now leaning back on a familiar tactic, tariffs. In addition to military support for Ukraine, Trump also proposed penalties on importers of Russian goods. You know what that means. Secondary tariffs target countries continuing to import from Russia. These countries would face a 100% tariff on their goods when imported to the U.S. Especially hard-hit would be China, India, and Turkey, who are top importers of Russian fossil fuels. Oil and gas represent one-third of Russia's income and over 60% of the country's exports. By penalizing these countries, Trump is looking to strike at the heart of Moscow's economy and cause Putin's funding for the war to dwindle. This is significant. So today, if you are in Beijing or in Delhi or you're in Brazil and you know that this is coming to you, you might want to call Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and say, hey, friend, we are still buying stuff from you, but you have got to get serious when it comes to these negotiations on a ceasefire or a peace deal, or otherwise we get hit by these secondary sanctions that will be also an effect directly on Russia, of course. But this is really significant. And it is smartly designed by the president. Similar secondary tariffs of 25% have been levied against Venezuela by Washington in March, with the administration claiming Caracas posed a threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
