Several European leaders and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have expressed disappointment at the 30% tariffs US President Donald Trump has announced, but maintained openness to reach a negotiated solution.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU will suspend its planned retaliatory tariffs on US goods, following President Donald Trump's introduction of new 30% tariffs. Von der Leyen emphasized that the EU's priority is to reach a negotiated solution with the US, using the time until August 1 to seek an agreement.

Other European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, European Council President António Costa, Dutch Prime Minister Dirk Schoof, and Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin, along with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, have also criticized the US tariffs. While maintaining openness to dialogue, EU officials stated they are prepared to implement countermeasures if negotiations fail.

Leaders of EU and Mexico slam Trump's 30% tariffs

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will suspend retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods scheduled to take effect Monday until August 1. She said the priority remains to reach an agreement with the U.S. after Trump announced new 30 percent tariffs. We have always been very clear that we prefer a negotiated solution. This remains the case and we will use the time that we have now until the 1st of August. And on the second track, since the very beginning, we have worked and now are ready to respond with countermeasures. We've prepared for this and we can respond with countermeasures if necessary. Other European leaders and Mexican President Claudia Schoenbaum also responded to the announcement expressing criticism. French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President António Costa backed the Commission's statement in separate posts on X. Dutch Prime Minister Dirk Schoof called the announcement concerning and not the way forward while Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin called it a setback.
