A new historical film on Palestine set in the years before Israel’s occupation, has premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The historical drama 'Palestine 36' debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, recounting the 1936 Palestinian revolt against British Mandate rule. Originally set to be filmed in Bethlehem, the production was moved to Jordan following the outbreak of war in Gaza in 2023, which gave the crew renewed motivation to complete the project despite ongoing hardships.

The film follows characters whose lives are transformed by the rebellion and explores the lasting impact of the events from nearly a century ago. 'Palestine 36' has been chosen as Palestine's submission for this year's Academy Awards, with its creators emphasizing the responsibility of representing their nation's history and ongoing struggle.

'Palestine 36' tells story of 1936 revolt against British rule

Telling the history of Palestine, while Israel attempts to erase it. The production of Palestine 36 was supposed to be filmed in Bethlehem, but was forced to relocate to Jordan after the war on Gaza broke out in October 2023. There will be no war to dispense without my permission, I'm afraid. The horror unfolding in Gaza gave the crew a new sense of urgency and purpose. Us getting out of bed every morning, despite the annihilation happening in Gaza, to our colleagues, to our friends, to our families, that's what kept us going also. We have to do it. We have to do it for us. And so being selected for Palestine, to represent Palestine, is a big honor. On Friday, it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it has been chosen as Palestine's entry into this year's Academy Awards. Being here today, surrounded with so many of us, it feels so emotional, and I feel honorable. It's a responsibility. You know, usually I come to red carpet and I introduce movies, but it doesn't feel that you're carrying your entire nation with you. You're carrying your people's fight for freedom. You're carrying tragedy, but also hope. The historical drama takes place during the Palestinian revolt against British Mandate rule in 1936, and follows several characters trying to adjust as their lives are changed by the growing rebellion. But the history that unfolded continues to shape events almost 100 years on. I read the script that Anne-Marie sent me, and I'd never read anything like it. It led me to want to know more about that period of history. So I went away and did a lot of research myself, including the diaries of the characters that I play in the movies, a real person, which really opened my eyes about British accountability in the events during the Mandate years, and the legacy of that. Films like Palestine 36 will continue to offer future generations a window to where the world stood in 2025, and where it was headed. Wilson Dysart, Al Jazeera.
