People in the neighbourhood are facing enormous hardships. Local businesses have been devastated. Shopkeepers say their livelihoods have been washed away overnight. Authorities were even forced to move inmates from the jail after floodwaters breached prison walls. People have been making makeshift draughts to ferry goods in as well as get people out. There is nothing left in our house that has survived. All of our belongings have been destroyed. Everywhere you look, there's only water. My entire life savings have been swept away. It has now been three days and no government aid or relief agency has arrived. For many here, the only option is to wade through the dirty debris-filled water to reach dry land. We're doing relief work on our own, yet no official aid of any kind has been provided. In the last 24 hours, no one has even come to ask us about our situation. The electricity has been completely cut off, and there is no system in place to drain water from homes. The problems are only getting worse. Punjab is Pakistan's most populous region and its breadbasket. Disaster here means the rest of the country will soon feel the impact. While residents here wait for these floodwaters to finally recede, the forecast warns of more rain on the horizon, potentially adding to even more hardship to a city already on its knees.
