As a tragic scene unfolded inside Florence's Yasmin Halal Market, we lost the most important person in the community. Dozens of people, part of a tight knit Somali immigrant community in northern Kentucky, watched on embracing one another and shedding tears over an unexpected loss. Everybody's devastated, especially her kids. It happened, police say, when a driver crashed this Toyota Camry into the storefront Saturday evening, killing 63 year old Fatuma Ali. It is very tragic. No one was expecting. As far as I know, we lost like a very important person today. Mahmoud Doody and Mahad Hassam say Ali was like family to them and a pillar in the immigrant community. She was a business person. Uh, very personally good person in the community. The two men say they believe it was some sort of an accident. Florence police are still investigating, but say the driver of the Camry accelerated forward, hitting Ali before coming to a stop inside the business. You can actually see behind me the impact of the crash left the car lodged inside of the store. At this current moment, crews are towing it back out. First responders worked on the scene for hours, met by so many desperate for answers. The reason we're all here is because we all came from the same place and we all the same community. We actually feel sympathy for each other. When one another happens something to each other, police say the driver of the Camry is cooperating with the ongoing investigation in Florence, Connor Steffen WCPN News.
