Flooding on the McArthur River has peaked with levels now slowly starting to recede, but the scale of the damage in Borroloola remains unknown. For evacuees taking shelter in Darwin, it is not clear when it will be safe to return home.

Flooding on the McArthur River in the Northern Territory has reached its peak, with water levels now beginning to decline gradually. The full extent of damage caused in Borroloola by this unprecedented flooding event is yet to be assessed and remains uncertain. Evacuees, who have sought refuge in Darwin, face uncertainty regarding the timeline for when it will be deemed safe for them to return to their homes.

The northeast town of Borrolula split in four under its biggest flood in decades. Just sick of the rain, because of what's happening, come up here, it's more rain up here and yeah, it's not good. After predictions of a record peak of 18 metres, Defence evacuated around 380 residents to Darwin. Those who live near the MacArthur River aren't sure of what they'll return to. It's right next to the creek and the river and I would say the house is now flooded right now. Authorities say the peak overnight was likely lower than expected. Where the river has peaked at the moment is fortunately a lot less and there will be less housing impacted as a result of that. Some homes just out of harm's way. With water levels on the MacArthur River falling, the heavy rain from ex-tropical cyclone Megan has moved south-west. A flood watch remains in place for vast sections of the centre, including the Simpson, Lasseter and Tanami districts. The rain band in Central Australia will persist over the weekend and even into next week, bringing rainfall totals between 20 to 50 millimetres in that area and flooding in Central and Western Northern Territory is still a going concern. An ongoing Telstra outage, believed to be caused by a power failure due to the weather, is making some locals anxious, unable to contact family still in the town. If anyone is trying to contact their family out there, be patient. There is limited connectivity. The Weather Bureau also unable to access real-time flood level data. Telstra is hopeful they can fly technicians to the tower this weekend. We're doing the best we can. Of course we apologise to anybody who was inconvenienced. With the town reduced to an island, a delivery of fresh food, courtesy of the MacArthur River mine, brought residents together. I think people are getting back to day-to-day as best you can under the circumstances. Full recovery still a long way ahead.
