But as Meredith Gorman shows us, that has many crying foul. The city announced a $164 million plan for a brand new recreation center in the West Village, replacing the Tony Depp Aledo Recreation Center on Clarkson Street, which has been closed since 2021. I think it's great because it'll get the kids to come outside and, you know, get out of the video games and just being home. The plan aims to honor the site's history, possibly reusing parts of the original building along 7th Avenue and Clarkson Street. And the city says the famous Keith Haring Carmine Street pool mural will be preserved. In a statement to Fox 5, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation said the old recreation center cannot be saved. They say the building and pool have been closed due to serious structural issues and that restoring it to meet modern programming, safety and full ADA standards is not feasible. But one local preservation group says the city hasn't done enough to make sure the rest of the historic Depp Aledo center can be saved. We have it confirmed on the public record that the parks department hasn't even investigated, hasn't commissioned any studies, hasn't seriously looked into what portions of the recreation center can be saved, reused, rehabilitated. The new recreation space will be located at 388 Hudson Street. Once the word gets around, I think everybody's going to use it because a lot of people want a pool. And I think what happens is instead of going to like the big major like, you know, companies that have pools that, you know, rec centers are all like cheap. It's affordable for everybody. I would use it now, you know, but I don't know that people I see here now would use it as much.
