200 years of service, it's nothing to sneeze at. New South Wales Mountain Police, the world's best and oldest, formed on this day in 1825. There was no famous coat hanger in sight. The Harbour Bridge was still a century away when the Mountain Police were here in New South Wales, keeping the then colony safe. Older than London's Mountain Police, older too than the famed Canadian Mounties. The first mounted unit started with two officers, two sergeants and twenty constables, so twenty-four in total. You know, horses can get to places that humans can't. Back then they were chasing convicts who'd gone on the run and bush rangers. Now, well, it's very much a hands-on love affair with the public, who today celebrated two centuries of proud tradition with a march through the city, golden hooves and all. Critical to community engagement and frontline policing, experts at traffic control and crowd management. They have such a calming effect. They really do diffuse situations when they can be hostile. Two decades ago, when May Day protestors unleashed. A police horse crashes to the pavement, marbles rolled under its hooves. The public rallied around Mounted Officer Sue Lowe and her horse, Hollywood. The public went nuts. Like, there was so much, you know, public outcry. I remember when I came back to work, there was a lot of cards, like a lot of kids and community members had written cards for my horse, Hollywood, wishing him a speedy recovery.
