Brazil's Supreme Court has convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro of plotting a coup, sentencing him to 27 years in prison. Four out of five presiding judges found him guilty of leading a criminal organisation that attempted to overturn the results of the presidential election.

The trial has divided public opinion in Brazil, with some celebrating the conviction and others, including Bolsonaro's supporters and family, claiming it is a case of political persecution. The conviction stems from events where Bolsonaro's supporters stormed key government buildings, calling for new elections and the removal of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro's son claims his father is not well enough to survive decades in prison. Unfortunately, Jair Bolsonaro's health is fragile. Doctors say so, and we hope that this persecution ends, which is why we keep putting pressure on from abroad, because this is indeed a case of human rights violations. Some celebrated the conviction. This should have been tried a long time ago. Brazil is proportionally the country that lost the most people in the pandemic due to incompetence, because the far right is a vehicle for the destruction of the country. Everything is destroyed. Healthcare, science, technology, education, culture, everything is destroyed. Others remain unhappy. Tens of thousands of his supporters have rallied in cities across the country in recent days, many agreeing with US President Trump that the trial is a witch hunt. They reject all allegations against Bolsonaro. It was Bolsonaro's failed attempt to stage a coup that led to his downfall. On January 8, 2023, hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters launched what was called the worst attack on the country's federal institutions since the return to democracy in the 1980s following two decades of military rule. In an echo of what had happened in the US under Trump two years before, rioters stormed the Supreme Court, the Presidential Palace and Congress, calling for new elections and urging the military to oust Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the newly elected left-wing president. Bolsonaro's supporters, including his son and lawmaker Flavio, says there is no evidence tying him to a coup. But others say the only reason it did not succeed was because Bolsonaro failed to gain the military's support.

Following a National Security Council meeting, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland would receive training from Ukraine on how best to down Russian drones.
