What began as a response to racial attacks decades ago is now a highlight on London's calendar. Continuing to do carnival every year just continues to reinforce the importance of equality and just understanding everybody, despite what background they're from. But with all this comes the challenge of making sure a gathering of this size stays safe. And to do that, police have used new digital face scanners they say will help them. But at what point does security become intrusive surveillance? Some campaign groups are saying that facial recognition technology is unreliable and unfairly targets black communities, casting a cloud over what's meant to be a celebration of freedom and of London's Caribbean communities themselves. While safety concerns at the carnival are not new, increased reports of knife crimes, sexual assaults and overcrowding are making the event more challenging for police. But critics of facial recognition technology say it can cause more trouble than it solves. It also has other issues such as discrimination and is incorrectly misidentifying people which actually is causing police more time and in fact the Met are already facing legal action against a misidentification of a man last year. Police say the enhanced technology is essential to contain risks that could lead to injuries or deaths, ensuring safety they say is crucial to keep the good times rolling.
