According to the World Health Organization, Nigeria accounted for over a quarter of global maternal deaths last year, with at least 75,000 recorded cases. Years of violence in Borno state have led to the closure of clinics and extremely low wages for doctors, further straining the healthcare system.

The situation is exacerbated by significant cuts to international aid and family planning budgets, which health workers warn will lead to even more maternal deaths unless urgent support is provided. Access to reproductive health services is particularly challenging in remote and militarized areas, leaving women and girls at heightened risk.

With U.S. aid cuts and family planning budgets slashed by 97% this year, health workers warn more lives will be lost unless urgent resources reach Nigeria's northeast.
