I cannot continue my re-election campaign. New York City Mayor Eric Adams dropped his re-election bid on Sunday in a nearly nine-minute-long video posted on X. His departure leaves Democratic nominee Zoran Mamdani facing former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, as the frontrunners in the November 4th election. Adams, a former New York City police officer, had a brutally unpopular tenure in the heavily Democratic city. He had been indicted on federal corruption charges, which he denied. I was wrongfully charged because I fought for this city. Those charges were dropped by new leadership at the Department of Justice following the election of U.S. President Donald Trump. Recent polls had support for Adams' re-election in the single digits, trailing far behind Mamdani and Cuomo. In his video on Sunday, Adams did not endorse either candidate and took swipes at both. Mamdani, who holds a sizable lead, is a self-described Democratic socialist. He has alarmed much of the New York business community and some within the Democratic Party with his leftist views. The fear among Mamdani's critics had been that Adams and Cuomo would split the opposition vote, giving Mamdani an easy victory. Trump, who had previously warned about the consequences of a Mamdani win and suggested Adams pull out of the race, said Sunday he welcomed the decision. Adams said he will finish out his term, which ends on January 1, 2026.
