Even when the mercury is rising and the sun is beating down, there's still work to do. It's very sticky. I think the boys are looking at it for an early mark. For some, that work is even more vital in a heatwave. We've got elderly people that have air conditioning problems. That's a priority for us to make sure that they're safe and we get their cores working. For farmers, keeping livestock cool is a constant battle when it's this hot. If you just try and move them and move them quickly, they'll overheat and then they'll die of exhaustion, which is awful. We don't like doing that. Smaller animals are also at risk during hot weather, and not just when temperatures are extreme. At this vet in Coola, every year they treat numerous dogs for heatstroke during the summer. Dogs can be susceptible at any stage, really. In the small town of Whitecliffs in the state's northwest, they're used to the heat. Most people live in underground homes that stay cool. Residents woke to temperatures in the low 30s, but it wasn't long before they hit the mid-40s. I never look at the thermometer. If you ask me the temperature, I don't know. Because I think if you ignore it, it's a little better. In the far west, some aren't too bothered by the soaring temperatures. High 30s, low 40s is fairly usual this time of the year. You know, you throw in a 45, 47 every now and then and we don't get too upset about it. It's summer. When the state reaches peak summer and visitor numbers in the tourist town dwindle, many businesses close their doors. It's just so hot and people who come from cooler areas, they don't handle our heat terribly well. For everyone else left in the town, they're looking for the closest watering hole.
