New Monticello exhibit chronicles centuries-old political story

At a moment of government shutdowns, showdowns, and political takedowns, there's a new effort to provide some political uplifting. It's happening at presidential estate Monticello, just a few hours away from Washington. They're sharing the story of two founding fathers who were both friends and foes. Scott McFarland takes us to Charlottesville, Virginia. In the mountains, in the fall, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the beauty of Monticello, the estate of America's third president, Thomas Jefferson, honors a man who was involved in the ugliest of politics. And his writings, readings, and artifacts foreshadow what America is experiencing right now. We're all watching this really toxic politics we have right now. Was it at all like that? It was very much like that. Jane Kamensky is the president and CEO of Monticello, which offers a snapshot of the wealthy plantation owner's life in the late 18th century, including his ownership of more than 600 slaves in his lifetime. We want to call forth a notion of civic capacity that is broad and elastic and that is compelling and convincing to people from the stories of these two men, their families, and the large enslaved workforce at Monticello, who does as much as anybody in the United States to make the promise of the Declaration real. Welcome in to what Jefferson called the hall. This year, Monticello is offering a new tour, Founding Friends, Founding Foes. It's centered around the at-times tumultuous relationship between Jefferson and his predecessor, John Adams. They're on-again, off-again civic friends. I talk about them as civic friends. So they have intense seasons of alliance and compatriot action. Kamensky says Jefferson's model for diffusing ugly disagreements with Adams might be key to unlocking the civility that's so often lacking in American politics. We want to show people that we have always been divided and that we have found ways through it by being frank, by extending each other grace in our political opinions, and by using the tools of reasoned civil disagreement, even over issues where we're passionate. Discussion, debate, welcoming your rivals inside the house for conversation. Just letting your voice be heard in whatever political spaces you are in. It's all offered at Monticello through their program called the Feast of Reason, an exercise in controlling political debate. Share your opinions and be open to listening to others. With a box of cards with questions that escalate from low-stress issues, such as your favorite snacks, to the wedge issues of American politics. Containing debate and disagreement was the point for Jefferson, who held similar conversations within these walls. Jefferson is somebody who enjoys civil discourse and dialogue. And so throughout this house, you see art that is juxtaposed specifically to make a point or to spark conversations. Steve Light is director of visitor services and leads tours of Jefferson's home. He shows how Jefferson embraced rivals with whom he bitterly disagreed. Jefferson's chief political foe, Alexander Hamilton. It's an embrace exemplified by this bust of John Adams, prominently placed inside Jefferson's home. You see that even though these two men had these great political differences, they also knew each other and they found a way to put the kind of common good above their own personal interests. And that's something that the founders thought a lot about. Jefferson and Adams, who died the same day, on America's 50th birthday, July 4th, 1826, were optimistic about the country's future, Light says, but only if opposing sides learn how to talk. Do you think he envisioned a time or multiple times where American politics was ugly? Not only did he envision it, he participated in it. And that's kind of what this tour is about.
