With colder air spreading across key regions, rising heating needs are driving natural gas prices higher and increasing concerns about energy costs this winter. AccuWeather's Anna Azallion explains.

Natural gas prices have climbed to their highest point in three years, following a shift in the polar vortex that brought colder-than-expected temperatures in December. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has revised its winter price forecast upward by about 40 cents compared to its November estimate, citing increased heating demand.

Futures prices have risen 39% since September, peaking earlier in the week before easing slightly. The EIA projects that households using natural gas will see a roughly 3% increase in heating costs this winter. AccuWeather's long-range forecast from October, which predicted higher energy bills, has now materialized.

Natural gas prices surge as early winter blast boosts demand

Natural gas prices just hit their highest level in three years, fueled by a shift in the polar vortex. The U.S. Energy Information Administration, or EIA, now expects winter prices to average about 40 cents higher than their forecast they released back in November. So why the spike? December turned out colder than the EIA expected, driving heating demand way up. Futures have surged 39% since September, peaking earlier this week before easing slightly. So for reference, they hit their highest level since 2022. Bottom line, the EIA says if your home runs on natural gas, expect about a 3% increase in heating costs.
