Major Leaguers vote each year to honor their own for achievements on and off the field. MLBPA's 2025 Player of the Year is Seattle Mariners star Cal Raleigh, with Kyle Schwarber, Tarik Skubal, and Paul Skenes also taking top honors. Skenes joins "CBS Mornings" to celebrate the win.

The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) has announced the winners of the 2025 Players Choice Awards, with players voting to honor their peers for achievements both on and off the field. Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners was named Player of the Year and the American League Outstanding Player, while Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies received the National League Outstanding Player award.

Pitching honors went to Tarek Skubal of the Detroit Tigers for the American League and Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the National League. Skenes, a two-time All-Star, was recognized for his impressive performance, including having the lowest ERA in the majors. The awards highlight the respect and recognition players have for each other's contributions throughout the season.

Only on CBS mornings we are unveiling the winners of baseball's players choice awards every year. Major leaguers vote to honor their own for achievements on the field and off the field as well. So without further ado and there's been a lot of ado this morning but without further the twenty twenty five player of the year is Mariner star Cal Raleigh. You know him better as the big dumper voted the American League outstanding player. The National League outstanding player award goes to Kyle Schwab. He of the shore bombs coming up monster year with the Phillies. As for those guys on the mound the Al outstanding pitcher award goes to Detroit Tigers ace Tarek Scobel. And over in the National League you know who it's going to be. The outstanding pitcher award goes to Pittsburgh Pirates two-time all-star ace Paul Skeens. Paul just happens to be here with us on set. Well congratulations. Congratulations. What's amazing about you is you're so young and so new to the league. You spent just a couple months at the Mariners in both years you've already been an all-star and now your peers are saying you're the best pitcher in the National League. How does that feel. Yeah I mean like you said it's just being voted on it by your peers is pretty darn cool. So it's an honor. Great to great to be here. Great to have the. So when you have the lowest ERA in the majors as you did this past year no one was better at preventing the other team from scoring runs than you. What do you even work on in the offseason. Like are you just trying to maintain. Are you trying to improve. Yeah definitely trying to improve. I think when you try to I don't know very many people that go into the offseason like yeah I just want to be the same guy I was last year. So I don't know. I don't know exactly what it is yet. But what are you feel like one hundred and eleven or something like what are the areas of improvement for you. What do you how do you even think about that. I'm not sure we're looking into that right now. That's a beautiful thing about all the data and analytics. We can run models and stuff like that to to figure out scenarios where we could get better. So so some of that now I played wide receiver. The reason I never played quarterback is because I didn't like the pressure. Some would call it performance anxiety. I was a decent basketball player all stayed in high school hated being on the free throw line. Once again performance anxiety. When I look at pictures on the mound it blows me away. And in a moment where any hit can change the complexion of the game you have thousands of people watching millions at home. How in the world do you center yourself in that moment. Great question and not let it overwhelm you. I get nervous just watching from my couch and I know it's different for each guy. Great question. But how do you do it. Yeah I think for me I've just done it my whole life. And so it's you know with nobody watching with millions of people watching it's the same game. And so we're we're on an island out there where you know just throwing pitches and later and all that by ourselves. And we've got you know seven people behind us to feel the balls. But yeah it just comes down to you know executing the pitch I think. So Paul the MLB Players Association put together a little video for you. Here's what they had to say. That's not a surprise. You know what he's been able to do in his career so far two years into it as nothing short of impressive. Pretty special. He's got a very good career. Yeah I mean he's one of the best in the game. A pitcher of that caliber the way he goes about it. So elite not just in his pitching but in his approach to the game you see him working hours and hours every day. He wants to be all time great. How does it feel to hear those things. Yeah it's pretty cool especially from those folks in particular. You know Brent Eric Aranola the Grom. I've looked up to the Grom you know for a while. So it's pretty cool. You've credited your girlfriend former LSU gymnast Libby Dunn for helping you stay present in all this. I would think maybe she would take your mind into other areas you know. But but you say it keeps you centered. I guess she knows something about being in the center of attention as a gymnast. Talk to me about this connection one athlete to another you have with her. Yeah it's just some you know we both know what it's like to you know for lack of a better term the arena you know the man in the arena that kind of thing. And so you know we can we can talk to each other about that. It's pretty nice. So she understands what you know what the life is like. I understand what she does. And so I think it works pretty well.
