Nuno Larrero, a 47-year-old MIT physics professor and father of three, was found shot inside his Brookline, Massachusetts home and later died in the hospital. Police are treating the case as a homicide and have not made any arrests. 

Larrero, originally from Portugal, had been at MIT since 2016 and was recently appointed director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. The incident comes amid heightened concern in the academic community following a recent mass shooting at Brown University, though authorities say the two cases are not connected.

Police arrived at this residence in the neighborhood of Brookline, Massachusetts, Monday, only to find Nuno Larrero, a father of three and a professor at MIT, shot inside his own home. The 47-year-old died the next day in the hospital. Residents were rattled by the gunfire in what's typically a quiet neighborhood in the suburbs of Boston. I heard a really loud noise. I thought it sounded like a crashing noise. Police are investigating Larrero's death as a homicide, with no one in custody yet. Larrero, who is from Portugal, was a physics professor at the prestigious college since 2016. Last May, he was named the director of one of the university's largest labs, the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. It's just really tragic and sudden, and especially this week, too. It's just a lot of really senseless violence. The school is now the second in the area to be impacted by gun violence this week, with students still processing the mass shooting at nearby Brown University over the weekend. It hits too close to home, because if it happens in Brown, it can happen here, too. If it happens to a professor, it can happen to a student, too. Back in Brookline, neighbors grieved together Tuesday night and placed candles in their windows to honor Larrero. It's the only way to get through something that's so enormous, so tragic, so frightening, so insane. I mean, this community is the only way to manage this. In a statement, MIT's president says, this shocking loss for our community comes in a period of disturbing violence in many other places. The FBI in Boston says there is no connection between Larrero's death and the shooting at Brown. Nate?
